Richard sat in his sisters’ sitting room. The twins occupied a place under each of his arms; two blonde heads lay upon his chest. His sisters hummed a pleasant Irish pastoral in two-part harmony. They knew of Richard’s favorites from Siobhan; she had told them before she accepted a generous pension and retired back to her homeland.

Ellie reached up and turned his chin so that he would look at her. “You do not have to do this.”

“I do,” he whispered.

Phoebe reached over, grabbed his chin, and turned it so he looked at her. This game of theirs he could play for hours. When they were toddlers, he did.

“We overheard you and Cousin William. We are not upset anymore,” she offered.

“You eavesdropped. I remain so,” he answered her back. He shrugged his shoulders. Their time together had ended. The twins pulled themselves up and assumed proper ladylike postures. He stood and faced them to hear their final entreaty. They turned, each twin taking a moment to look the other in the eye, and next focused on him.

Here comes the harmony!

“We are not so handsome, that you must champion us so,” they spoke in unison.

“You are to me.”
